When it comes to living with systemic mastocytosis (SM), you are not alone on this journey.
People with SM may need to take a number of different medications to prevent and treat symptoms.
Learn more about the various experiences of people living with SM and how it affects their everyday lives.
GO TO PATIENT STORIESCommunication is one of the most important elements when it comes to managing SM. Being open and honest with those around you may help create a support network that can aid in your journey.
Here are some tips on how to talk with the important people in your life.
Your innermost circle can be your strongest supporters. While asking for help can be difficult sometimes, it is important to know your family and friends care about your well-being.
Sharing how your symptoms affect your life may help others understand you. For example, "My symptoms are a 7 out of 10 today" can provide a meaningful baseline for understanding how you feel.
If you’re with a larger group, make sure at least one person there knows about your condition and how to help, if you experience symptoms.
Make sure the people you’re closest with know the signs and protocols (for example, how to administer an Epi-Pen® if needed or get you immediately to the emergency room if necessary).
Conversations with a new doctor or one who is less familiar with SM can seem overwhelming because there is a lot of information to cover. While only a doctor can make a diagnosis, the SM Symptom Quiz can be a useful place to start and may help you have an informed discussion with your doctor regarding symptoms you have experienced.
